Dental Bridges: An Overview
Missing teeth can cause many problems, from difficulty eating and speaking to embarrassment about your smile. Dental bridges may be a good option if you’re missing one or more teeth. Dental bridges can help improve your smile functionality.
Dental bridges are false teeth used to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth. They are usually made of porcelain or ceramic and are held in place by dental crowns that we place on the teeth on either side of the gap. We can use dental bridges to replace one tooth or multiple teeth.
While bridges can last for many years, their lifespan will depend on several factors, including the type of bridge, the materials used, and how well they are cared for. Common types of bridges that can last for 10 to 15 years include porcelain fused to metal (PFM,) porcelain, and ceramic. PFM bridges may be more expensive than other types, but they provide a natural feel and are durable.
The better you care for a bridge, the longer it can last. Bridges are easy to care for – be sure to brush, floss regularly, and visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
The cost of dental bridges will vary depending on the type of bridge, the materials used, and the number of teeth that need to be replaced. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Loay Shadid to receive an accurate cost estimate for your personalized treatment. Dental insurance may cover some of the costs associated with getting a bridge, but it is essential to check with your insurer to see what is covered. We work with most insurance plans at Durham Dental Center to help patients pay for our quality dental care. We also offer flexible financing plans to help patients manage costs.
Benefits of Dental Bridges
There are many benefits of dental bridges, including the following:
- Improved chewing and speaking ability
- Restored smile aesthetics
- Maintained facial shape
- Prevention of remaining teeth from shifting out of place
What to Expect During the Procedure
Getting a dental bridge usually takes two visits to the dentist. We will prepare the abutment teeth for the crowns during the first visit. The preparation involves prepping some of the teeth’ enamel to fit the crowns. Impressions will also be taken of the prepared teeth so the dental bridge can be custom-made. We may place a temporary bridge over the prepared teeth until your next appointment.
The temporary bridge will be removed and replaced with your custom-made dental bridge at your second appointment. We will check the fit, and we will make any necessary adjustments. Once you and Dr. Shadid are satisfied with the fit, we will cement the bridge into place.
